Pork Egg Roll Sandwich Recipe

This Pork Egg Roll Sandwich is an ode to doing whatever the eff you want. Play heavy metal on an acoustic guitar. Get a tramp stamp. Get a degree in Latin. Take out a mortgage on a home you can’t afford. Disappear for a week and come back with a Jamaican accent. Give a stranger $50. Quit your job. Say what you mean. Mean what you say. Start a garden two months too late. Pray for your enemies. Whatever you feed the algorithm, it’ll feed it back to you tenfold. Might as well serve it with some duck sauce.

Ingredients

Egg Roll Bread

  • 2 Tbsp canola oil + more for frying
  • 2 Tbsp freshly minced garlic
  • 2 Tbsp freshly minced ginger
  • 1 cup freshly minced brown mushrooms
  • 1 lb tri-color coleslaw
  • 5 scallions
  • 1.5 Tbsp soy sauce
  • 1/2 Tbsp hoisin sauce
  • 2 tsp sesame oil
  • 1 tsp chili oil
  • Salt, to taste
  • 16 egg roll wrappers
  • Ramekin of water, for wetting egg roll wrappers

 

Pork Egg Roll Burger

  • 1/2 head garlic, minced
  • 5 green onions, thinly sliced
  • 1.5 Tbsp hoisin
  • 1.5 tsp Shaoxing wine
  • 18 Dashes fish sauce
  • 1.5 Tbsp fresh ginger, minced
  • 1 Tbsp sesame oil
  • 3 Tbsp sriracha
  • 1.5 tsp pepper
  • 3/4 tsp Chinese five spice
  • 1.5 lb ground pork
  • 1/2 cup plain panko
  • Canola oil, for greasing grill grates
  • 8 pieces of Egg Roll Bread
  • 1/2 English cucumber, thinly sliced into discs
  • 1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced into sticks
  • ~24 fresh mint leaves
  • Duck sauce, for topping sandwich

COOKING INSTRUCTIONS:

Egg Roll Bread

  1. To make Egg Roll Filling: Heat oil in a large pan over medium-high heat. Add garlic and ginger then sauté for 3-5 mins. Add mushrooms and sauté for another 3-5 mins. Stir in coleslaw, scallions, soy sauce, hoisin sauce, sesame oil, chili oil, and salt, then cook until coleslaw is lightly wilted. Remove from heat and let cool to room temperature.
  2. To cut Egg Roll Bread: Lay one egg roll wrapper flat, then—using a martini glass with a ~5” mouth—slice a circle out of the center of the wrapper. If your martini glass is smaller than 5”, just adjust the diameter of your pork burger in the Egg Roll Sandwich instructions. Reserve the egg roll wrapper scraps to fry them for snacks. Repeat with remaining egg roll wrappers.
  3. To build Egg Roll Bread: Working one at a time, lay an egg roll wrapper flat. Dip your finger in ramekin of water then lightly wet the edges of the egg roll wrapper. Spread out egg roll filling evenly over wrapper while maintaining a ~1/2” edge that’s uncovered (like you’re making ravioli). Be sure not to overstuff the egg roll. Take another egg roll wrapper, lay it flat, wet the edges, then place the wet side down over the filling so that the edges of both wrappers line up perfectly. Lightly press along edges to seal. Repeat with remaining ingredients.
  4. To fry Egg Roll Bread: Heat 1/2″ deep oil in a pan between 350º to 375ºF. Maintain this range while frying. Working 2 egg roll breads at a time (don’t overcrowd the pan), fry for 1-2 minutes per side or until golden-brown. Remove from oil and drain. Serve immediately as Pork Egg Roll Burger (instructions below).

 

Pork Egg Roll Burger

  1. Preheat grill to medium-high heat.
  2. In a medium bowl, mix together garlic, green onion, hoisin, Shaoxing wine, fish sauce, ginger paste, sesame oil, sriracha, pepper, and five spice until well-combined. Add pork to bowl and gently combine it into mixture without overworking the meat. Form 4 balls, then press them into ~1/2” thick patties. Set aside on parchment-lined baking sheet.
  3. Using a paper towel or brush, evenly grease grill grates where you’ll be cooking pork patties. Immediately place burgers on grill and cook for 3-4 mins per side, or until completely cooked through (160ºF). Remove patties from grill.
  4. To build Pork Egg Roll Burger: Lay one fried Egg Roll Bread flat. Top with 1 pork patty, 6 mint leaves, 6 cucumber discs, ~12 pepper sticks, Duck sauce, then another Egg Roll Bread. Repeat with remaining ingredients. Enjoy!
